Expert Witness Preparation
Paul Scargall
This seminar will provide practical advice for appraisers in advocacy and being a witness. One of the most stressful, intense and, at times, unenjoyable experiences for a professional appraiser is having their work subject to scrutiny, examination and dissection at a hearing or trial. A portion of the anxiety associated with judicial proceedings arises from the fact that the proceedings are foreign to most professional appraisers and they participate in such hearings without the benefit of experience or familiarity.
This seminar is intended to take appraisers through the trial process and point out the actual procedure that the majority of judicial hearings and trials in Ontario follow. This seminar will go to the examination for discovery stage, as well as the attendance at trial and cross-examination. Not only will this seminar cover procedure at trial and certain elements of the cross-examination, but it will delve into effective ways of dealing with difficult situations which commonly arise on cross-examination.
